A Town Mouse and a Country Mouse were companions. The Country Mouse one day welcomed his companion to come and see him at his home in the fields. The Town Mouse came and they sat down to a supper of barleycorns and roots the last of which had a particularly hearty taste. The taste was very little to the essence of the visitor and directly he said to his friend,
"My poor dear friend, you live here no superior to the ants. Now, you should simply perceive how I admission! My larder is a standard horn of bounty. You should come and remain with me and I guarantee you might live on the best stuff around."
So when he came back to town he took the Country Mouse with him and indicated him a larder containing flour, cereal, figs, nectar, and dates. The Country Mouse had never seen anything like it and sat down to appreciate the luxuries his companion gave.
But before they had well started, the entryway of the larder opened and somebody came in. The two Mice rushed off and shrouded themselves in a restricted and exceedingly awkward opening. By and by, when all was calm, they wandered out once more. But another person came in, and off they left once more.
This was excessively for the guest.
"Goodbye," said he, "I'm off. You live in the lap of extravagance, I can see, however you are encompassed by perils while at my home I can make the most of my simple meal of roots and corn in peace."
